Monk Took Book: library science, but haunted

Monk Took Book

Loot Score8.7/10Stats updated · refreshed from Steam every few hours

Every morning, new books with odd little symbols arrive at the greatest monastic library of the Dark Ages. Your job is to shelve them however you like and then remember where you put them, because at night the Scribes come asking for specific tomes. Monk Took Book is basically a memory and organizing game in a cozy-creepy medieval abbey, and it's playable solo or with up to three fellow monks.

The loop is wonderfully satisfying. Invent your own filing system, earn Blessings to spend on perks and new shelves, and fend off vermin, spirits and other beasts with daggers, crossbows or a holy cross after dark. Books can catch fire, get doused with buckets, or be hurled across the room, so things get chaotic fast. Fans of Wilmot's Warehouse will feel right at home, and couples and friend groups are having a blast with it in co-op, complete with proximity voice chat. Hate the monster bits? You can dial enemies down or switch them off, and there's an arachnophobia mode too.

Small print: controller support is only partial, and it's Windows-only. The night rush can get a little frantic if you just want to tidy in peace, though that's what the difficulty sliders are for. The two-person team behind it has been patching quickly through the first week.
